Questions, answered honestly
It’s okay to have questions.
Reaching out can feel like a big step. Here are the answers people usually need before they pick up the phone.
What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MBBS, then MD/DNB in Psychiatry) who can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication and provide psychotherapy. A psychologist is trained in psychological testing and talk therapy but does not prescribe medication. At OJAS, care is led by a consultant psychiatrist with counselling and psychotherapy support.
Do I need to know what is wrong before my first visit?
No. You can simply describe what has been on your mind or what has changed in your daily life. The first consultation is a conversation — together you and the doctor will figure out what is going on and what would help.
Consulting a psychiatrist means I am “mental”?
No. Psychiatrists treat common, everyday problems such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, phobias, anger, exam stress, addiction and relationship difficulties. The idea that only "serious cases" see a psychiatrist comes from movies and stigma — it is a minority of what a psychiatrist actually sees.
Are psychiatric medicines addictive?
Most psychiatric medicines are not addictive. A small group of medicines used mainly for sleep or severe restlessness is prescribed for short periods of 4–6 weeks. Your doctor will always explain how long a medicine should be taken and why — you can ask about dependence at any visit.
Will a doctor from another specialty treat my mental health problem?
Due to the shortage of mental health professionals in India, doctors from other specialties sometimes prescribe basic psychiatric medicines. For accurate diagnosis, correct dosing and therapy, consulting a psychiatrist is always the better choice.
Can I consult online instead of visiting the clinic?
Yes. OJAS offers teleconsultation by secure video call for follow-ups and for people living far from Kangra or Dharamshala. Call or message the clinic to check availability and book a slot.
Is my information kept confidential?
Yes. Consultations at OJAS are strictly confidential. Your records and reasons for visiting are shared only with your consent, except where disclosure is required by law or to protect immediate safety.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the concern. Some people feel clearer after one or two consultations; conditions like depression, OCD or addiction usually improve with regular follow-up over a few months. Your doctor will suggest a plan and revise it as you progress.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring a valid ID, any previous prescriptions or reports, and a short note of your main concerns and when they started. If a family member is coming with you, their observations are often helpful too.
Do you treat children and older adults?
Yes. OJAS sees children and adolescents for behavioural, attention and emotional concerns, and older adults for memory problems, dementia, sleep issues and late-life depression.
How do I book an appointment at OJAS?
Call or WhatsApp +91 80913 13880, or email ojasnpc@gmail.com. The team will confirm a time at the Kangra or Dharamshala centre, or arrange an online consultation.
